Overview of Roll Shaft
The roll shaft (mandrel) is the core load-bearing component in composite rolls. Although it does not directly contact the strip, it carries the entire rolling force and bending moment.
Therefore, its material requirements are fundamentally different from sleeves or working layers, focusing on:
- Extremely high strength and toughness to resist bending and torsional loads
- High fatigue strength to withstand millions of stress cycles
- Good hardenability to ensure uniform properties across large cross-sections
- Moderate hardness for machinability (keyways, threads, etc.)

Materials
Available Grades:42CrMo、9Cr2Mo and 45CrNiMoV
| Property | 42CrMo | 9Cr2Mo | 45CrNiMoV |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core Characteristic | Cost-effective, balanced performance | High strength and hardness, but very low toughness | Ultra-high strength, high toughness, excellent fatigue resistance |
| Toughness / Safety | Good | Poor (high risk) | Excellent |
| Strength / Load Capacity | Good | Very good | Excellent |
| Hardenability (large sections) | Good | Medium | Excellent |
| Fatigue Resistance | Good | Poor | Excellent |
| Cost | Low | Medium | High |
| Application Positioning | Small to medium size, standard load shafts | Not recommended as main shaft material | Large, heavy-duty, high-reliability shafts |
How to Choose the Right Material
- For small to medium mills under standard load:
42CrMo is the most cost-effective choice. It is mature, reliable, and fully capable of meeting general operational requirements. - For modern, large-scale, high-load mills:
45CrNiMoV is strongly recommended and often essential.
Its higher cost is justified by superior reliability and safety, as shaft failure can lead to catastrophic damage far exceeding material cost differences. - About 9Cr2Mo:
Strongly not recommended as a primary shaft material.
Unless under very specific and carefully engineered conditions, its low toughness makes it unsuitable for shaft applications, where impact resistance is critical.
