Overview of Leveling Rolls
Leveling rolls are critical components in straightening (leveling) machines, positioned in alternating upper and lower rows to eliminate strip shape defects and residual stress in metal sheets or strips.
Through repeated bending and controlled deformation, leveling rolls improve flatness and correct shape imperfections such as waves, camber, and edge waves.
Although they do not primarily serve as cutting or forming tools, leveling rolls play a key role in ensuring uniform stress distribution, stabilizing strip geometry, and achieving precise flatness control under high-contact stress and demanding operating conditions.

How to Choose the Right Material
Selection depends entirely on the material being straightened and working conditions.
For mild steel, non-ferrous metals, silicon steel, etc.:
86CrMoV7 is the most ideal and recommended choice. It offers the best balance between wear resistance and toughness, with long service life and high safety. It can fully replace 9Cr2Mo.
If budget is very limited and load is light, 9Cr2Mo can be used.
For high-strength steel and alloy steel (e.g., wear-resistant plates):
When straightening force is high, high-carbon steels risk fracture. In this case, 60CrNiMo is preferred as it provides sufficient strength and safety margin.
For extreme heavy-duty conditions or machines with previous roll breakage history:
Safety and reliability must come first. 50CrNiMo is the safest option, offering ultra-high toughness to minimize catastrophic failures such as roll breakage. In this case, increased regrinding frequency is acceptable in exchange for safety.
Applications of Leveling Rolls
Leveling rolls are widely used in metal processing and straightening lines, especially where precise flatness and stress relief are required. They are suitable for processing carbon steel, stainless steel, silicon steel, and high-strength alloy steel across a wide range of industries.
Conclusion
For a modern continuous processing line (such as pickling–rolling–annealing–coating–finishing lines), ensuring overall stability and operational reliability is critical.
When straightening high-strength materials, investing in leveling rolls made of 60CrNiMo or 50CrNiMo for straightening machines is a highly effective preventive strategy. It significantly improves safety under heavy loads and impact conditions, reduces the risk of roll failure, and enhances the long-term stability of the entire production line.
